The event will take place after the completion of the Teleki Castle’s restoration
As a long tradition, on the first Sunday of each September, a Petőfi Festival is held in Coltău. Visitors from distant places and regions gather to commemorate the honeymoon of Sándor Petőfi and Júlia Szendrey spent in the town. The event starts with a church service, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Petőfi-Szendrey statue in the park. The celebration ends with an open-air cultural programme.
My mother, Eleanor (Nóra) Teleki often spoke about the wonderful time she spent in the castle and gardens as a child. She lived with her parents István Teleki and Eleonóra Fernbach in Budapest, and at the same house lived János Teleki and Márta Fernbach and their son Karcsi. They all holidayed together in Koltó along with their cousin András Domahidy. My mother developed her love for nature and the countryside playing with her two cousins there. There were only two small photos of the house that I saw as a child in Australia but my mother’s enthusiasm made me want to see it some day. My wife Anne Marie and I finally saw the house, gardens and nearby cemetery in 2018 and were captivated by its charm and historical importance. With the recent restoration it is destined to be an important local historical landmark. Joe Bolza (great-great grandson of Sándor Teleki) Melbourne, Australia
It’s a strange thing with Koltó, the Telekis have some thing special. When land and bloodline come together it results in a mystical combination that neither can be rationalised nor removed from your memory, it’s some thing instinctive. (Harold P. de Vladar: The Smell of Wet Soil – an interview with Paul de Vladár Teleki, 2014)
In the park of the castle you can visit the Petőfi cornel tree and the artworks inaugurated in the past decades: statue of Sándor Petőfi and Júlia Szendrey (created by Gábor Benő Pogány, 1998), bust of Count Sándor Teleki (created by László Dinyés, 2009), bust of fmous composer Franz Liszt (created by László Dinyés, 2011) and bust of General Bem (created by Árpád Deák, 2014).
The ancient corn tree under which once Petőfi wrote many of his poems and Sándor Teleki was buried in 1892 has fallen in 1997. Since then a new tree has grown in its place from a sapling. The current surrounding of the tree has been updated based on the plans and financial support of Zoltán Marosán, architect from Baia Mare. The wrought iron fence is the work and donation of Csaba Győri, artist from Baia Mare in 2011.
